Detroit Red Wings
Delving Into The Red Wings’ Goalie Search | DHN+
The Detroit Red Wings need to pick up an experienced goaltender to share the net next season with Thomas Greiss. In reality, they probably need two of them, one to play in the AHL with Grand Rapids in case of an emergency situation.
Luckily for them, there is a glut of goalies about to enter the NHL’s unrestricted free agent market. That group includes two of the three goaltenders who played for Detroit last season. Both Jonathan Bernier and Calvin Pickard are going to become UFAs.
Will the Wings go big in their search for a goalie? Will they go stop gap? Might they stay with the status quo and re-up with Bernier?
Whoever they sign, it will be someone who needs to play a lot of games. In eight full NHL seasons, Greiss has only seen action in more than 43 games once. His career high is 51 games with the New York Islanders in 2016-17.
Whatever choice the Wings make, it’s good to know that there are plenty of options, even if some of those options aren’t the least bit realistic.
